Bushnell Cemetery in Sodus, NY is a 19th century jewel perched on a small rise at the side of Lake Rd on Lake Ontario. In many cemeteries of this period the headstones have fallen victim to weathering and pollution. At Bushnell many are deeply etched and still readable. While some have fallen and are slowly becoming lost under the grass, the stones that remain upright are fine examples of 19th century carving, allowing the visitor to appreciate the style and sentiments of the period.
Two children of Thomas and Hannah Smith died in the fall of 1853, ages 2 and 3.
These stones are fine examples of the tree of life and the weeping willow, common symbols of grief and life renewing in the 1800s.
This cemetery also brings into focus the fact that death claims both old and young: David Harbertson died at age 95, while Phebe was just 24.
