To my sorrow, one of my favorite monuments is both a victim of nature and the clearing shown in my previous blog about the cemetery. This double monument had been under attack from the vines for some time and is now lost under the vegetation and the debris left from the clearing..
In 2014 , I was able to get a picture of the well-worn stones of the double monument, now lost. They honor William Patton Irwin b 1789, d April 6, 1863 and Mehetabel Irwin b 1804, d Aug 20, 1863.
The image above was taken last year when the trees were still forming the backdrop for the cemetery. The double monument had fallen and only the top piece that joined the stones was left. What will happen to the two remaining family stones?
The trees and vines are gone now. The double stone is lost under the debris. In the background is land cleared for perhaps an apple orchard.
Another view today. Perhaps the fallen stones may be salvageable if they can be rescued from the debris..
Change in this cemetery continues. Another disappointment is the disappearance of an evergreen watching as a sentinel over the headstones.
This casualty appears to be the result of a lightning strike, but it is just another insult to this once beautiful cemetery.
