The next stone, honoring Henry Emery, who died in 1831, has an intricate willow design and is signed by the carver. Some stones of this period were set deeply into the ground instead of using a base. The total length of the original stone was over 6 feet, allowing 21/2 feet to be buried, for stability. This one had broken at the ground, and again towards the top. The final piece was re-cementeed the next week, having given the lower two thirds a chance to set before the top piece was added.
The final project of the day involved the resetting of the base and cementing of 4 pieces. I had to leave before it was finished. The picture shows 3 attached sections and one to go. This double stone, unusual for the period, honors the lives of husband and wife Abigail Mann, died 1851, And David Mann, died 1864.
