Another sunny day with new snow drew me to Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Rochester, NY. Created in 1887 as a garden cemetery, the older part has handsome statues overlooking large family groups of smaller headstones. On this particular day the statues, interspersed with stately trees, gave a sense of peace and serenity to the quiet repose of those buried here. A few deer had left their footprints, but there had been no other human visitors since the last snowfall. There was a sense of timelessness here that day.
In the more modern part of the cemetery, wreaths were still abundant; loved ones had been visiting. The essence of those who had gone on ahead was still actively connected with the families left behind. There was an ongoing interaction between the living and the dead.
Sadly, though the virus numbers are down in our area, burials here continue on a daily basis.
