As the 20th century began, headstone styles changed yet again, becoming simpler in shape and design. Granite, less affected by pollution and the elements, became the predominant headstone material. Granite is more difficult to carve, so fine detail, such as the extended epitaphs of the early 1800’s, were less common. Carved designs were limited to a smaller area. Monuments and obelisks lost their rounded edges, and statues tended to be less intricate. Mausoleum design often adopted Art Deco features. Burial in rows made lawn maintenance easier.
The memorial garden concept provided an additional alternative in cemetery design early in the century. The original Victorian garden approach of the prior century was simplified, concentrating on a broad expanse of lawn with memorials of equal size lying flat on the ground. As the 21st century approached, personal offerings such as flowers and mementos added more individual expression.
